Oh So Close!

Well what a shame Saturday was … to say I was disappointed is an understatement! What hurts more is the anguish that Brett Rule suffered at the end of the game when we should not have been in that position! Kickers are heroes one week and villains the next .. take it from me I have first hand experience of that!! The boy was distraught and unconsolable afterwards but he is strong and will be stronger for the experience!

Without doubt Henley were a good side and posed threats throughout the game. They came with a big reputation of being a strong forward pack with a dominant scrum. I think we put the scrum scenario to bed in the first couple of minutes shunting them backwards at a rate of knots! I felt their description of a “weighty” pack was unjustified, I think it was down to technique and being better than they were! Our front row were one of the best if not the best in National 1 for a number of seasons, they have taken that reputation into National 2 South. It will take a good unit to better them. Our line out functioned better but still is not firing on all cylinders and we are not clinical enough around the breakdown and are giving away far too many penalties. Outside the scrum I felt we should have kicked a bit more and when we do kick it has to be better and into space but all said and done we lost and we now have to pick up the pieces for a very tough encounter at Lydney at the weekend. They have had a very good start to the season and beat Clifton at Clifton last weekend. The supporters there are hugely passionate people and create a daunting atmosphere.

The World Cup is now taking shape and New Zealand looked unbelievably good and I can’t see anyone touching them at present. Australia recovered from their defeat to Ireland and South Africa look strong but not hugely convincing at this stage. The Scots have a tough one facing them now with a must win game against an England side that is still not firing on all cylinders despite their big win against Romania. My tip for the quarter finals is: New Zealand v Argentina, England v France, South Africa v Australia, Ireland v Wales.

The club held a Race Night on Friday night and what a good night it turned out to be. I must say I felt the evening was made by the large contingent of Mini Junior parents who attended. These sort of nights can either fall flat on their face or be enjoyable and the enthusiasm shown by the MJ mums and Dads was brilliant. Frame UK also contributed and a tidy sum was raised for club funds.

As previously mentioned Nathan Thomas goes into hospital next Tuesday for his operation to donate his kidney to his daughter Oceanna. I am sure you will all join with me in wishing Nathan, his daughter and all their family the very best of luck. I have known Nathan since he was 7 years old and he is a live wire to say the least and will come through this whole experience with flying colours. He is obviously very nervous and apprehensive but his fighting spirit will get him through. I recall his 8th birthday party at the Carn Brea Leisure Centre! It was in the days when I considered myself pretty fit and was in pre season training with Shaun Roberts, Simon Blake and Marcel Gomez. On this particular day Nathan decided he had had enough of the usual party games and wanted to take me on in a lap race on the athletics track. I agreed, and it was like someone wound his coiled spring up and off he want, but he had Duracell batteries in and just wanted to keep running and running …. needless to say 1 and a bit laps was enough for me! In all seriousness though, this is a massive thing Nathan is doing and his bravery and that of his daughter should be an example to all and hopefully will make people aware of how valuable organ donation is to make both young and old peoples lives better.

Over the coming weeks I will be inviting people to come to the club to have a discussion about the club, its immediate and longer term goals and how individuals can help in keeping a good standard of rugby at the club. Times are incredibly demanding now and the current economic situation coupled with a number of other things are having a massive effect on rugby clubs up and down the country, in fact many sports are beginning to suffer …. just look at Plymouth Argyle! I will be in touch shortly!!

This is in the very early stages of planning but it needs airing so a note about a very big fund raising initiative being discussed by 3 of our younger players. Matt Bowden, Brett Rule and Aaron Penberthy are in the early stages of planning a bike ride next summer from John O Groats to Lands End. The venture is to raise funds for a chosen charity that is still to be decided and for medical kit to kit out the clubs Physio Room. There is a massive amount of planning to go into this and it is a big venture to plan. If anyone has got valuable info on fund raising, equipment, transport etc it would be more than welcomed.

National 2 South is now beginning to tae a bit of shape but it is still very early days. Richmond look to be a good team and are most peoples favourites to go up. Worthing are still in the top 3 and Henley are there as well …. had things had gone our way and the couple of kicks that were missed went over, we could be battling in that top quarter but, as I said, it is very early days and a very long way to go yet!

On the injury front, Lewis Vinnicombe is now fit and available, Aaron Penberthy will miss another 2/3 weeks, Matt Bowden probably another 4 weeks, Danny Clackworthy has a pulled calf sustained in training last week and at this time have little idea go how long that will keep him out, Darren Semmens, who withdrew before the game on Saturday with a knock, will, hopefully be ok for this weekend.

On a different note, Matt Shepherd who joined us from St Austell a few weeks ago, has requested his release from his contract owing to work commitments and difficulties with travelling. I have granted that release to allow Matt to return to St Austell with the hope that once he is able to sort things he will come back and give it another crack. I firmly believe that if players have difficulties in situations like this or have other GENUINE reasons for leaving clubs then they should be allowed to do so. If a player cannot commit 100% to what you want or are about then there really is no reason to make it difficult for that player and insist he stays. Yes a contract is a contract but its the same as a job, if you don’t like it or you are having difficulties you give your notice in and you move on. In Matt’s case his reasons are genuine and understandable, he is young and wants to play rugby regularly, he is struggling with the travel and the necessary commitment … we wish him the very best of luck!

Two of our explayers came face to face on Saturday when PJ Gidlow’s Doncaster played Mark Bright’s London Scottish. In another ding dong battle Doncaster came out on top with PJ getting the “star man” accolade in the weeks Rugby Paper.

That is it this week …. will see some of you at Lydney on Saturday ..

Cheers for now.

Director of Rugby

Redruth 13 Henley 14

The Reds came frustratingly close to bringing the high flying Hawks 100% record to an end in a titanic struggle that saw the lead change hands five times. Had Brett Rule’s last minute penalty been successful they would have done so.

The home side took the lead when their powerful scrummaging lead to the award of a penalty from which Brett Rule took the points. The Hawks started to settle into the game exerting pressure on the Reds’ line. Henley’s second row forward Dave Clements found the opening to drive over for a try in the corner. James Comben’s difficult conversion attempt hit the upright.

Henley dominated the second quarter but failed to score as opportunities were squandered as penalties were conceded giving the Reds the chance to clear their lines. The Reds had their chances too but no further score was added in the first period.

Early pressure from the visitors after the interval saw them extend their lead through a Comben penalty but this seemed to give Redruth the boost they needed. A good break by Owen Hambly set up a try in the corner for fellow flanker Chris Fuca. Rule struck a touch line conversion to put the Reds two points in front.

Henley’s excellent kicking from hand repeatedly made The Reds retreat whilst Redruth’s kicking was less accurate and effective giving Henley too many counter attacking opportunities. Another Comben penalty put the Hawks back in front as the pace of the game rose.

Tom Notman made a fine break down the right wing and narrowly missed a touchdown for Redruth as he chased his own kick ahead. In what was a very close call the referee awarded a twenty-two metre drop out to the visitors.

As the hour mark approached Rule put Redruth back in front with his third successful kick of the afternoon but Henley responded with wave after wave of attacks on the Redruth line. The Reds’ defence held firm but conceded a penalty in front of the posts with three minutes to go.

With a one point deficit to overcome the final minutes were frenetic as Redruth sought the winning score. Rule had a twenty metre shot at goal to win the game with the last kick of the game but his attempt went agonisingly wide.

Dave Penberthy, Redruth’s Director of Rugby, was disappointed that his side had not played the sort of game they had planned. “We concentrated too much on the opposition instead of our own game. We defended well but didn’t put the ball into the spaces they left. But they won so fair play to them.”

Another tough challenge awaits next week as the Reds travel to Lydney who are fifth in the league, just one place above them.

Dings Crusaders 13 Redruth 35

Posted under Headlines,Match Reports by admin on Sunday 18 September 2011 at 1:30 pm

Peter Joyce made a great success of leading the Reds for the first time as they gained a tremendous first ever league win at Landseer Avenue.

A strong cross wind and showers of rain made conditions difficult and the first half ended all square at 6 points all, Brett Rule kicking two good penalties for the Cornishmen while Dings replied with a drop goal from Waylon Gasson and a massive penalty from the half way line by Harvey Skelton.

Dings were disrupted at the start of the second half with the loss of former Bristol centre Sam Cox with a nasty facial injury that required him to go to Frenchay hospital for treatment and everyone at Redruth wishes him a full and speedy recovery.

With Jamie Semmens running well in midfield, the Redruth forwards started to pen the home side in their 22, and five successive penalties to the Reds midway through the half ended with two yellow cards for the home side.

Redruth took advantage running in tries from Tom Duncan, Dean Bonds and Tom Notman with Rule converting two from the touchline.

In the closing stages James Litchfield crashed over for a try converted by Skelton to bring Dings back into the game before Duncan with a dummy ran in his fifth try in four games from the half way line to get the vital bonus point try, Rule potting the extras to round off a good team performance.

Matt Biggins from Falmouth came off the bench to make his debut for the Reds in the closing stages.

Chris Pooleys development team were well beaten by a strong Dings side who have had a great start to the season with a win over local rivals Whitehall last week.

Craig Williams who partnered Alan Rule at half back kicked a first half penalty for the reds.

Redruth had a strong front row through Malcolm Hearn, Jamie Tresidder and Danny Clackworthy and Lewis Moyle had a great game in the back row containing skilful Dings team.

Thanks to Paul Gunn and a contingent of Albany boys for helping make up a full team.

Back to Business

So 3 games gone and the first write up since the season started! Its been a busy few weeks for me if I am honest and with just starting a new job I have found it pretty difficult to find time to do much else other than learn the ropes! However, enough on that, the season has started ok for us: a bonus point win at home against Shelford, a disappointing result at Worthing and a close call against Launceston on Saturday. I am pretty happy with 10 points out of 15 at this stage and it is proving to be a challenge to settle and get used to many differing circumstances at Level 4. The league is very competitive with some tough characters making quite an impression but I am sure once we get used to things we will be fine and will be competing with the best of them.

The game at Worthing proved costly injury wise and we lost the services of Aaron Penberthy and Lewis Vinnicombe for the derby game. Hopefully Lewis will recover quickly from the foot injury he sustained, but Aaron’s knock is going to take quite a while longer. He has fractured a rib and that is likely to keep him out for 6/8 weeks. Its a difficult injury to manage as he can’t do anything at all other than sit, very uncomfortable at that, and wait. Its a shame because he has just signed for the Cornish Pirates and was hoping to feature in their games in the British & Irish Cup. However, that chance will come, hopefully, later in the season and he must now concentrate on allowing the natural healing process to kick in and then work hard with the conditioning people at the Pirates. Matt Bowden continues his rehab from the torn abductor muscle he suffered at Bath and, hopefully, will be back doing light training in the next 3/4 weeks. Other than that we still have some knocks kicking around the place but nothing that is too concerning at this stage.

The derby game on Saturday seemed pretty flat to me, I don’t know what you thought? I was pleased with the win and the performance was better than last week. Launceston are going through a rebuilding process very much like ourselves and it does take time. I have great respect for Tony Roques, Simon Owens, Tom Rawlings and following Saturday’s game it was evident that respect is mutial. Derby games between the 2 sides have been outstanding over the years with Launceston gaining the ascendancy but it is vital that the fixture maintains its impact on the game and what other derby in National 1 or National 2 North or South can command a crowd of over 1250?

The new Richard Sharp Lounge Bar was officially opened by the man himself on Saturday prior to the game against Launceston. He is an absolute legend of the game and of the history of Redruth Rugby Club. He spoke with great dignity and I could stand and listen to him without getting bored … ever! We are so lucky to have a man like that, with his incredible rugby pedigree, as one of our all time greats! It was also fitting that Dawn and Derek Ladner were present at the lunch because the work they have done on the clubhouse has been exceptional.

Was surprised to see an old “Mucker” of mine at the club on Saturday … Nige Pidwell was there on Dave Mill’s stag day and it was great to see him again as I have not done so for a number of years … we used to work together at SWEB (as it was then) for many years and enjoyed some really good times together … especially our lunch time golfing exploits! Hopefully he will be back again soon even though he is a “Camborne” man!!

The Development Team, under the very watchful eye of Chris Pooley, had their season opener against Launceston Development on Saturday with the game played at the Redruth Albany ground. It is very kind of Albany to allow us to use their facilities and we are very grateful for that. The game itself was a very close run affair with the Reds coming out on top 29 – 27. Chris said it was a great team effort with the youngsters playing exceptionally well. Hopefully the boys will have regular fixtures this year and will be playing each week. Point scorers for the Reds were Greg Goodfellow, Ben Gregor, Josh Morgan, Chris Instance and Jamie Edwards (who is Spade’s son and was guesting from Hayle) Craig “Eggy” Williams kicked 2 conversions and Danny Clackworthy, who led the side, did so exceptionally well. One other player to catch the eye was James Ball resplendent in his bright yellow boots!

The World Cup kicked off on Friday with New Zealand playing Tonga. The 1st half performance by the All Blacks was very good but they took their foot of the gas in the second and allowed Tonga back into the game. Although Tonga were never going to win it, they certainly fought hard! The pick so far has to be the Japanese who performed heroically against France and were well on course to provide the first shock of the tournament, but France managed to hold their nerves and won by a clear 26 points in the end which was not a fair reflection on the game. The Japanese were tenacious in everything they did and will cause some upsets along the way that is for sure! England stuttered to a win over Argentina and the performance left a huge amount to be desired. We looked lethargic and not really interested at times but hopefully this will be the wake up call. Lets not forget Argentina are a very good side, they finished 3rd in the last World Cup, they always start the competition with a strong performance, they beat France who were the host nation, in 2007 and they are will be going the Tri Nations very soon! Australia looked very good in the second half of their game against Italy and Scotland just managed to beat Romania. On Sunday South Africa played Wales and what a performance by the Welsh. They were outstanding and it was such a shame that Rhys Priestland failed with his last gasp drop goal attempt. The Welsh certainly deserved more, their back row was outstanding, Priestland, Roberts and Davies formed a great midfield and in Shane Williams and George North they have two outstanding wingmen. James Hook is class and I would like to see that penalty attempt from another angle … did it or didn’t it go through????? I fancy Wales going a long way in this but I think my money is on the hosts, they can’t choke again can they?????????? Australia will be there or there abouts and there will be a surprise nation and I think that maybe Samoa this time around!

This weekend its a trip to Dings, with a supporters coach heading up to help us renew old acquaintances, and then we play host to high-flying Henley Hawks who have three good wins under their belts. We’ll be holding a special Member’s Buffet in the Frame Homes Suite for just £5 per person, so be sure to cheer us on from there!

Cheers for now,

David Penberthy
Director of Rugby
