Report by Roger Watson
Redruth completely dominated this Cornish Derby played in perfect conditions in front of a bumper crowd enjoying the winter sunshine and were well worth the three tries to nil win.
The weather, which took its toll with the rest of the league programme meant a late change of referee as Nick Williams stood in for the snow bound Darren Gamage. The Launceston supporters’ coach also fell foul of the weather as did one of their replacements.
From the outset The Reds looked refreshed from their three week enforced break, immediately stamping their authority on proceedings and taking just seven minutes to open the scoring through an Aaron Penberthy penalty. The Blacks had the opportunity to level things up moments later but Mal Roberts saw his penalty attempt drift wide of the posts.
The home forwards started to take control going through good phases and supplying the backs with plenty of ball and were unlucky not to score from a fine break and chip ahead from Nathan Pedley who enjoyed the afternoon both in attack and defence.
With the lineout working well Redruth dominated the set piece as well as the breakdown area. Ball retention was good with several turnovers being won.
The first try came from a patient build up by the Red pack, picking and driving before the ball was passed wide to full back Jack Nowell who joined the line to finish the move off. Ben Hilton made a couple of strong runs for Launceston but it was the home pack which drove over to round off the first half for Steve Wood, making a welcome return from injury, to touch down.
Launceston had another opportunity to get on the scoreboard with the final action before the break but Roberts once again missed the target.
The visitors knew that the first score of the second period would be crucial. Ryan Westren took an interception but was brought down short of the line by Lewis Vinnicombe. Another promising Launceston attack was thwarted when Richard Bright fumbled the ball as he crossed the try line.
It was all Redruth after that with forwards and backs combining well, The Blacks never looking like breaching The Reds’ defence. Penberthy was successful with a penalty and five minutes later landed a well struck drop goal. Deep into stoppage time Mark Bright crossed for one of his trademark tries from the base of the scrum, Penberthy adding the extras to round off a comprehensive win for The Reds.
Launceston’s Director of Rugby, Simon Owens, was philosophical in defeat.
The guys need to take a good look at themselves. We are about the lowest we can be right now but we have the ability to bounce back. We need the two week break to come back refreshed in the New Year.
Understandably David Penberthy, the Redruth Director of Rugby, was elated by his team’s performance.
The boys have worked really hard during the lay-off. They have done everything we’ve asked of them. We’ve used the time to really pull together as a group. There’s still a lot of work to do but it was great to see Steve Wood back to fitness and Damien Cook and Luke Collins really stepped up today. Hopefully both sides will start to put some wins together and climb the table because Cornish rugby needs us both in National One.
Next up at the Rec will be Camborne on the 27th December in the traditional derby fixture. As well as pride and history to fight for, the legendary Cornish clotted cream wizards at Rodda’s have supplied the new Rodda’s Milk Cup for both Choppers and Squareheads to fight it out over. Let battle commence!
