Redruth 26 Cornish All-Blacks 0

Report by Roger Watson

Redruth completely dominated this Cornish Derby played in perfect conditions in front of a bumper crowd enjoying the winter sunshine and were well worth the three tries to nil win.

The weather, which took its toll with the rest of the league programme meant a late change of referee as Nick Williams stood in for the snow bound Darren Gamage. The Launceston supporters’ coach also fell foul of the weather as did one of their replacements.

From the outset The Reds looked refreshed from their three week enforced break, immediately stamping their authority on proceedings and taking just seven minutes to open the scoring through an Aaron Penberthy penalty. The Blacks had the opportunity to level things up moments later but Mal Roberts saw his penalty attempt drift wide of the posts.

The home forwards started to take control going through good phases and supplying the backs with plenty of ball and were unlucky not to score from a fine break and chip ahead from Nathan Pedley who enjoyed the afternoon both in attack and defence.

With the lineout working well Redruth dominated the set piece as well as the breakdown area. Ball retention was good with several turnovers being won.

The first try came from a patient build up by the Red pack, picking and driving before the ball was passed wide to full back Jack Nowell who joined the line to finish the move off. Ben Hilton made a couple of strong runs for Launceston but it was the home pack which drove over to round off the first half for Steve Wood, making a welcome return from injury, to touch down.

Launceston had another opportunity to get on the scoreboard with the final action before the break but Roberts once again missed the target.

The visitors knew that the first score of the second period would be crucial. Ryan Westren took an interception but was brought down short of the line by Lewis Vinnicombe. Another promising Launceston attack was thwarted when Richard Bright fumbled the ball as he crossed the try line.

It was all Redruth after that with forwards and backs combining well, The Blacks never looking like breaching The Reds’ defence. Penberthy was successful with a penalty and five minutes later landed a well struck drop goal. Deep into stoppage time Mark Bright crossed for one of his trademark tries from the base of the scrum, Penberthy adding the extras to round off a comprehensive win for The Reds.

Launceston’s Director of Rugby, Simon Owens, was philosophical in defeat.

The guys need to take a good look at themselves. We are about the lowest we can be right now but we have the ability to bounce back. We need the two week break to come back refreshed in the New Year.

Understandably David Penberthy, the Redruth Director of Rugby, was elated by his team’s performance.

The boys have worked really hard during the lay-off. They have done everything we’ve asked of them. We’ve used the time to really pull together as a group. There’s still a lot of work to do but it was great to see Steve Wood back to fitness and Damien Cook and Luke Collins really stepped up today. Hopefully both sides will start to put some wins together and climb the table because Cornish rugby needs us both in National One.

Next up at the Rec will be Camborne on the 27th December in the traditional derby fixture. As well as pride and history to fight for, the legendary Cornish clotted cream wizards at Rodda’s have supplied the new Rodda’s Milk Cup for both Choppers and Squareheads to fight it out over. Let battle commence!

Redruth U10′s v Lankell-Fowey U10′s

Posted under Under 10's by Chris Sidwell on Sunday 12 December 2010 at 9:33 pm

Redruth U10′s entertained Lankelly-Fowey on Sunday in what was to prove to be probably their toughest game to date. The mood in the Redruth camp was somewhat subdued after the news that Launceston U10′s had pulled out of the fixture due to several of their key players being sick, but in hind sight, Lankelly gave us a real good work out.

As per last week, we agreed to play two games enabling all the players from both sides to get game time.

Both games were played in excellent spirit with hard running andeven harder tackling coming from both teams. It was Lankellywho dominated the line outs with their physical presence but it was the handling of the Redruth boys, especially in the first game  which proved to be their undoing.

1st Game; REDRUTH 30 LANKELLY 0

Scorers; Patrick Wilkins (2), Jack Goldring (2), Jordan Opie and Jordan Sidwell.

2nd Game; REDRUTH 15 LANKELLY 15

Thanks to Paul and his gang, a really good morning of rugby played in great spirit and attitude, it was a pleasure to have you all at the Rec a nice to referee a good bunch of boys.

Redruth U9′s v Llankelly Fowey U9′s

Fair Win For Red’s

REDRUTH U9′s, 30  -  LLANKELLY FOWEY U9′s, 20

Redruth U9′s welcomed LLankelly Fowey U9′s last weekend to their home ground on a bitterly cold but dry day.Unfortunately LLankelly Fowey arrived with a shortage of two players which Redruth kindly leant them so they could play a full squad.Redruth’s Captain for the day was Sam Hicks, who, had put in plenty of run’s himself which resulted in him scoring two tries for his team.

Both sides showed passion in their game play with lots of rucking, rolling mauls and turnover ball.LLankelly Fowey though, had some quick boys which showed to be their try scorers and also proved to be at times a tough and worthy opposition, but credit to the Redruth U9′s on their defence and some try saving tackles which kept their visitors at bay, and also saw Redruth’s Bailey Berriman scoring his hat-trick of tries, (one when playing for the visitors). Redruth crossed their oppositions try line by running in with six tries to LLankelly Fowey’s four.
Try Scorers: Sam Hicks (2), Kieran Daughtery (1), Lewis Wills (1), Bailey Berriman (3)

Blaydon v Redruth – Postponed

Posted under Headlines,Match Previews by admin on Friday 10 December 2010 at 11:19 am

Despite a valiant effort by our northern friends, this weekend’s fixture against Blaydon has joined the list of postponements which the first XV has faced over the past couple of weeks.

This means that the next senior fixture due to be played is the crucial derby game against our favourite adversaries the Cornish All-Blacks, with a 2pm kick-off on December 18th. We’ll see you there, along with the rest of Cornwall!
