London Scottish 34 Redruth 15

Match report by Ed Bawden

Redruth were outplayed in the second half as they went down to a 5 tries to 2 defeat at the Richmond Athletic ground.

After a slow start Redruth dominated the second quarter and went into the interval trailing 17-10 with the prospect of the advantage of the wind in the second period. However the Cornish side were overrun in the second period as Scottish chalked up their first win of the season.

In a hesitant start, Redruth stood off tackles and flanker Willie Lipp crashed over near the posts after 3 minutes for a try that James Brown converted for the hosts.

Redruth replied quickly with a well struck 35 metre penalty by Aaron Penberthy following a back foot offside offence, but Scottish responded with a 45 meter penalty by the left footed Brown in the 10th minute after the Reds were caught offside.

Midway through the half Scottish stretched the Reds defence on both flanks before a good run by Stephen Hihetah ended with an inside pass to Hertfordshire winger Tim Holgate, who touched down near the posts for Brown to convert.

With Penberthy putting in some good tactical kicks and three long runs from Lewis Vinnicombe, Redruth came into the game in the second quarter.

The Reds forwards pounded the Scottish line for a long period, passing up two easy penalties and were finally rewarded when Mark Bright drew the defence from a 5 metre scrum. When he was tackled Nick Simmons was on hand to dive over for a try that Penberthy converted 2 minutes before the break.

Redruth turned the ball over in the opening play of the second half and spent a long time containing Scottish after that. The hosts, who were playing at their rugby at good pace, got a second try in the corner by Holgate in the 48th minute.

After holding out the hosts for a long period Redruth lost Damien Cook to a yellow card for repeated team offences after 62 minutes and a couple of minutes later Scottish number 8 Mark Soden forced his way over for an unconverted score that put the game out of the Reds reach.

Scottish lost lock Josh Brown to a yellow card but replacement Alex Karonias forced his way over that James Brown converted after 72 minutes.

A well timed run brought a consolation score for Reds replacement Steve Kenward with 5 minutes to go.

Redruth return home for two consecutive weekends next to face two of National League 1′s new teams, with Rosslyn Park waiting to be entertained at the Recreation Ground before their south-eastern neighbours Barking.

Redruth U10′s, who enjoyed a higly successful season last year winning 2 Festivals as well as being undefeated, have attracted a new shirt sponsor. Laura Millward from Westcountry Tile Centre has generously sponsored 20 playing shirts, which will hopefully last the boys for the next couple of seasons.

A squad of 14 players are off to the Clifton Festival on Sunday, so at least we will look resplendant in our new kit, many thanks Laura from all of the U10′s.

Good Luck boys!!

Redruth’s U10′s squad visited Hayle U10′s on Friday night for a training match and some much needed practice before next weeks Clifton Festival. The match was played over four 10 minute sessions with plenty of coaching in between the play, allowing the boys time to get to grips with the contested scrums and lineouts. Thanks to Jason for refereeing and helping players from both sides.

The Redruth boys played with great spirit against a robust Hayle outfit, we now need to work on our set pieces and our tackling, but in general our attacking play was excellent as we kept the ball for long periods at a time, infact our first try came after 7 phases of play and finished off superbly by Patrick.

All of the squad managed to get plenty of game time, and, although the score was irrelevant, we still came out on top by 7 tries to 2.

Scorers were, Jack G (3), Patrick W (2) and Jordan S (2).

Well done all,

See you on Sunday.

Chris.

Redruth u18′s Colts v Truro School u18′s

Posted under Colts Archive,Headlines by Stuart Morrison on Sunday 19 September 2010 at 4:05 pm

On Saturday 18th September, Redruth U18 visited Truro School, this was a hotly contested match with the Reds finally succoming to the pressure from Truro School, the score ended 34-10 to the hosts. Despite the scoreline the Reds maanged to close the gap on Truro School who had beaten them convincingly in last years encounter. Perhaps next year we can go that step further.

Redruth 17 Blackheath 28

Posted under Headlines,Match Reports by admin on Saturday 18 September 2010 at 7:11 pm

Match report by Roger Watson

Despite a much improved performance, Redruth’s losing streak continued. The visitors were quickly out of the blocks and took a three point lead through a Sam Windsor penalty in the second minute. Aaron Penberthy struck back to put Redruth on level terms only to find themselves trailing again, as Matthew Vaughan took his chance to touch down following some clever interplay between forwards and backs.

Blackheath kept The Reds pinned in their own twenty-two for much of the first quarter, with Penberthy and Windsor exchanging penalties to keep the visitors in front. The Reds put some good phases together with excellent performances from a number of players including Nathan Pedley and Luke Collins. As their confidence grew Redruth started to dominate and looked the stronger of the two sides as full back Jack Nowell touched down to give the hosts a three point lead at the break.

It was Blackheath who seemed to benefit more from the interval and two well taken Windsor tries at the start of the second period, separated by a further Penberthy penalty, meant that Redruth had to chase the game but, despite strong running from Mark Bright and Redruth Man of the Match Owen Hambly, the Blackheath defence was a match for everything Redruth could throw at them.

A try from Sean Moan was converted by Windsor to take his tally for the afternoon to eighteen. Redruth pressed hard in the closing stages but were unable to close the gap.

Afterwards a disappointed Redruth skipper, Darren Jacques, gave full credit for the way Blackheath had tightened up their defensive play in the second half but vowed, “It’s getting better, we will put it right.”

The Reds’ Director of Rugby agreed that there were many positives to taken from the game despite the loss.

This was a much better performance with young Jack Nowell outstanding. We deserved the half-time lead but once we conceded those two quick tries at the start of the second half we were playing catch up rugby but we still put together some attractive stuff.

Redruth will next travel up to London Scottish who, despite being most pundits’ clear pre-season favourites, are the only other side in the league yet to register a win. National League 1 action returns to the Recreation Ground in two weeks time when Redruth welcome new kids on the block Rosslyn Park and Barking in consecutive weekends.
