Match report by Roger Watson
Redruth took five much needed points from this eight try thriller to pull out of the bottom three.
The visitors were quickly out of the blocks signalling their intention to get their speedy back line moving the ball wide. Good interplay between forwards and backs gave James Keinhorst the opportunity to cross for a well-worked opening score but Jervis Manupenu’s conversion attempt hit the upright, denying him the extras.
Manupenu soon made amends with a well struck penalty to give Otley an eight point lead.
Whilst not really suiting The Reds, the end-to-end frenetic play gave them the chance to open their account through an Aaron Penberthy penalty. Another penalty resulted in Mark Bright driving over from a well-organised maul following the lineout and a Penberthy conversion to put The Reds in front.
Back came Otley with two tries in two minutes, the first by Curtis Wilson coming in-field from the wing to split the defence with an angled run which give Manupenu a simple conversion. From the restart the ball went wide to full back Christian Georgiou who caught Redruth napping and ran fifty metres unopposed to touch down in the corner.
Penberthy kept Redruth in touch with another penalty before the interval.
The Reds took a firm hold of affairs in the second period with the forwards taking control, the back row and Man of the Match lock Chris Fuca to the fore. Redruth looked much more comfortable as they got their pick and drive game going. Three more tries came, the first courtesy of Sam Parsons who finished off a fine move started by Penberthy deep in his own half. Bright took up the running to put Parsons in for Penberthy to convert.
Another well-worked move saw Bright add his second of the afternoon, Penberthy adding the extras.
Irresistible pressure from the Redruth forwards led to the referee awarding a penalty try after repeated infringements from the visitors, Penberthy making it a seven point score.
A poor Redruth lineout gave Otley an attacking opportunity with James Twomey having the last say as he crossed for Otley’s fourth try to give them a point to take back to Yorkshire.
Coach Craig Bonds was pleased with Redruth’s second half performance but was disappointed to have conceded four tries.
“We coughed up far too much ball in the first half when we lacked control. At half time we agreed we had to start from scratch and we overpowered them up front.”
Next week The Reds will be looking to keep the momentum going as they make the longest journey in National League rugby when they visit Tynedale, before returning home to host Coventry on the club’s Lady Godiva Day on the 26th February.
